Immunity and Infections

Immunity and Infection - a modern and Ayurvedic view of treatment

Infectious diseases and their prevention are key topics in the field of health. We most often encounter respiratory infections, intestinal viruses, but also complications caused by bacteria. Ayurveda, the ancient Indian medicine, and modern medicine offer different approaches to strengthening immunity and preventing these diseases.

Causes of origin

Modern medicine identifies infections as the result of exposure to pathogens such as viruses, bacteria, fungi and parasites. These pathogens enter the body in different ways - through the respiratory tract, the digestive system, through the skin or through sexual contact. Factors such as a weakened immune system, chronic diseases, unhealthy lifestyle, stress and poor hygiene can increase the risk of infection. Modern medicine focuses on the identification of a specific pathogen and provides targeted treatment, such as antibiotics, antiviral drugs, but also various drugs or natural food supplements. Ayurveda, on the other hand, perceives infections as the result of an imbalance of the three basic life energies or " doshas" - Vata, Pitta and Kapha. Each type of dosha controls certain functions in the body, and their imbalance can lead to various health problems, including susceptibility to infections. For example, excess Kapha can lead to respiratory infections, while an imbalance of Pitta can cause inflammation and heat-related infections. Ayurveda also emphasizes "Agni" or the digestive fire, which is considered the basis of a healthy immune system. Weak Agni can lead to the accumulation of toxins (Ama) in the body, which weakens the body's defenses and facilitates the development of infections.

Ayurveda focuses on a holistic approach to treatment that includes dietary, lifestyle changes, herbal treatments and techniques to detoxify the body to rebalance the doshas and strengthen Agni. This approach is aimed not only at treating current symptoms, but also at preventing future infections by addressing the root causes of the imbalance in calf.

Recommended herbs

  1. Amalaki (Emblica Officinalis):Also known as Indian gooseberry, it is highly valued for its strong antioxidant properties thanks to its high content of vitamin C. It supports detoxification and cleansing of the body, thereby increasing the body's defenses. It improves liver function and promotes respiratory health, which is useful in the treatment of respiratory infections.
  2. Ashwagandha (Withania Somnifera):Considered an adaptogen, it helps the body manage stress and lower cortisol levels, which can be helpful in reducing the risk of stress-related infections. It supports overall vitality and energy, thereby increasing the body's resistance to infections.
  3. Tulsi (Ocimum sanctum):It has strong antiviral, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, which makes it exceptional in fighting various infections. It is often used in the treatment of respiratory infections such as flu and colds.
  4. Neem (Azadirachta indica): It has strong antibacterial, antiviral and fungicidal properties. It is particularly effective in the treatment of skin infections and promotes skin health.
  5. Giloy (Tinospora Cordifolia): Known for its immunomodulating properties, Giloy helps in increasing the production of white blood and improves the body's resistance to infections. It is useful in the treatment of fever and other symptoms of infections.
  6. Phyllantus Niruri:Supports the health of the liver, which is important for the proper functioning of the immune system. It has antiviral effects, which are especially useful in the treatment of viral infections of the liver.
  7. Indian Echinacea (Andrographis paniculata): Supports the immune system and has significant antiviral and antibacterial properties. It is often used in the treatment of colds and respiratory infections.
  8. Triphala: A blend of three fruits (Amalaki, Bibhitaki and Haritaki), Triphala is effective in detoxifying and cleansing the digestive tract, which is the basis for a strong immune system. It supports the health of the digestive system, which is key for effective absorption of nutrients and removal of toxins.
  9. Guggul (Commiphora mukul): Contains powerful anti-inflammatory compounds that may be useful in treating inflammatory conditions associated with infections. It supports metabolism and detoxification, which is important for maintaining a healthy immune system.

Other suitable herbs:

Turmeric (Curcuma longa): Contains curcumin, an ingredient with significant anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. It supports the body's natural defenses and helps fight infections. Black pepper (Piper nigrum): Increases the absorption and effectiveness of other herbs and medicines. It also has antimicrobial properties that can be helpful in fighting certain types of infections. Ginger (Zingiber officinale): Strong anti-inflammatory and antibacterial effect, ginger is effective in the treatment of respiratory infections and improves the immune response. Licorice - Licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra): Supports the immune system and has antiviral properties. Licorice is particularly effective in the treatment of respiratory infections and inflammation.

The use of these herbs in Ayurvedic procedures can significantly contribute to strengthening the immune system and better resistance to infections. However, it is important to consult an experienced Ayurvedic practitioner or physician regarding the use of herbs and their combinations, especially if other medications are already being used or there are specific health concerns.

 Suitable diet and lifestyle

  • Diet According to the Doshas: Ayurveda recommends adapting the diet according to the individual constitution (dosha). For example, individuals with a predominant Vata dosha should consume warm, oily and tender foods, while for Pitta, cool and less spicy foods are ideal.
  • Digestive Fire (Agni): Support a strong Agni by eating fresh and simple foods that are easy to digest. Avoid overeating and eating very heavy, cold or raw foods, which can weaken the digestive fire.
  • Detoxification and Cleanliness (Ama): Regular detoxification and ensuring that food and drink are clean and free of toxins is key to maintaining a healthy immune system.
  • Routine and Sleep: A regular daily routine, including a sufficient amount of sleep, is important. Ayurveda emphasizes the importance of getting up before dawn and going to bed early.
  • Balanced Diet: Modern medicine recommends a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grain products, lean proteins and healthy fats. These foods provide essential vitamins and minerals that are important for supporting the immune system.
  • Hydration: Adequate fluid intake is essential for the proper functioning of the immune system. Water helps transport nutrients, remove waste products and keep mucous membranes moist, which is important for protection against infections.
  • Physical Activity: Regular exercise promotes circulation, helps with weight control and reduces stress , all of which contribute to better functioning of the immune system.
  • Stress Reduction: Chronic stress can weaken the immune system, so it is it is important to find effective ways to manage it, such as meditation, yoga, deep breathing, or relaxation techniques.
  • Sufficient Sleep: Lack of sleep can have a negative effect on the immune system. Adults should sleep 7-8 hours per night for optimal immune system function.
