Ulcerative colitis

Description of ulcerative colitis

Ulcerative colitis is an inflammatory disease of the large intestine (called colon in professional terminology). The lining of the large intestine becomes inflamed and small boils form. Ulcerative colitis affects only the lining of the large intestine, while Crohn's disease can affect any part of the wall of the gastrointestinal tract.

According to Ayurveda, ulcerative colitis is a disease of the pitta dosha with varying degrees of involvement of the vata dosha. Excessive intake of pitta-dosha-increasing diet and pitta-dosha-increasing regimen initially affects adipose tissues (called rakhta and mamsa dahtu in Ayurveda).  The vata dosha acts and worsens the pitta itself in the large intestine, and the kapha dosha causes inflammation, accumulation of mucus and edema (swelling).
