Main properties of Shatavari

Ayurveda signifies Asparagus racemosus, as an important herb to treat disorders affecting women’s health and classify it as:

  • Medhya: Enhancing intelligence, promoting learning and memory
  • Rasayana: Improving health by increasing immunity, vitality and resistance. It acts as rejuvenator and imparts longevity as well as helps in reducing stress.  
  • Balya: As strength promoter
  • Stanya: As a galactogogue  (induces milk secretion)
  • Jeevaniya- As an erythropoietic

The modern Ayurvedic practices utilizes the roots of herb as antispasmodic, appetizer, stomach tonic, aphrodisiac, galactogogue, astringent, antidiarrheal, anti-dysenteric, laxative, anticancer, anti-inflammatory, blood purifier, anti-tubercular, antiepileptic and night blindness, kidney problems and throat complaints. Shatavari shows the galactogogue effect. It regulates hormonal secretion, which induces milk production in nursing woman. Traditionally, Shatavari tubers are eaten by nursing woman to the production of breast milk. Shatavari rejoices its richness in medicinal properties that has been utilized by the people for centuries. Apart from its major role in inducing lactation, Shatavari has been used for gastric ulcers, and dyspepsia.
